Steffi Graf Voted the World's Greatest Sportswoman of All Time


BILD’s reporters in Germany were asked to nominate their top ten greatest ever sportswomen.
And perhaps it's no surprise that tennis goddess Steffi Graf (40) - the last woman to complete the Grand Slam in a calendar year - emerged as the unsurprising clear victor.
There was also room for fellow tennis legend Martina Navratilova and sprinter Florence Griffith-Joyner - as well as a few surprises!


The Top-10 list of world's greatest ever sportswomen of all time:
  1. First place: Steffi Graf (40) – Tennis goddess with 22 Grand Slam titles, Olympic Champion in 1988, five time sportswoman of the year....186 weeks at no.1. She now lives in Las Vegas
  2. Second place: Birgit Fischer (47) – With seven gold and three silver Olympic medals....she is Germany's most successful Olympian of all time.
  3. Third place: Martina Navratilova (52) – Tennis queen with 331 weeks as no.1, 18 Grand Slam titles.....167 tournament victories. She is now a gay rights campaigner.
  4. Fourth place: Kati Witt (43) – The ice queen. She has two Olympic golds and four world championships... was voted Germany's ice skater of the century and has set up a foundation for children
  5. Fifth place: Nadia Comaneci (47) – Perhaps the best gymnast of all time...the Romanian has five Olympic Golds, three silvers and one bronze.
  6. Sixth place: Wilma Rudolph († 54) American world record sprinter....she won three Olympic Golds in 1960.
  7. Seventh Place: Ulrike Meyfarth (53) The high jumper won Olympic golds in 1972 and 1984...she has broken several world reocrds and was named sportswoman of the year on four occassions.
  8. Eight place: Rosi Mittermaier (58) – Known as 'Gold-Rosi', the skiing star was a double Olympic champion in 1976....in downhill and slalom. She is a German sports ambassador.
  9. Ninth place: Larissa Latynina (74) – The Medal Queen. Between 1956 and 1964 the Ukrainian won nine Olympic golds for gymnastics. She is the most successful Olympian ever, and now lives in Japan.
  10. Tenth place: Florence Griffith-Joyner († 38) – A legendary 100m sprinter who ran 10.49 seconds in 1988.which remains a world record to this day. The American died in 1998.
